Laying the groundwork for Geoscientific Collaboration in Central Asia

02 February 2024

In January 2024, Atabek Umirbekov and Daniel Müller embarked on a mission to Central Asia where they engaged in a series of networking meetings with universities and research institutes in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. This initiative was part of the SWECA project, funded by GEO Mountains under the Adaptation at Altitude Programme. The SWECA project reconstructs long-term and high-resolution snow water equivalent data for the Tian Shan and Pamir mountains.

The primary objective was to strengthen collaborative efforts in geoscientific research. The IAMO team showcased their research highlights in the context of climate, hydrology, and sustainable agriculture in the region. The mission facilitated crucial knowledge exchange and provided insights into ongoing research gaps and endeavours in Central Asia. The interactions revealed mutual areas of interest, laid the ground for future joint projects and initiatives. This mission underscored IAMO's commitment to addressing critical challenges related to environmental sustainability and agricultural practices in the region.
