02 May 2023

Atabek Umirbekov from the Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Transition Economies (IAMO) met with officials from the Space Research and Technology Agency under the Ministry of digital technologies of the Republic of Uzbekistan (UZSPACE) to discuss the importance of earth observation technologies for sustainable development in agriculture and water resources sectors. The meeting provided an opportunity for both parties to exchange relevant experiences and expertise and explore potential areas for collaboration.

UZSPACE was established in 2019 with the aim of promoting space research and technology development in Uzbekistan. It is responsible for coordinating and implementing the country's space program, which includes the design, development, and operation of space-related technologies. One of the agency's main objectives is to enhance the country's capabilities in earth observation and geospatial technologies.

The meeting was seen as a positive step towards collaboration between IAMO and UZSPACE in using earth observation technologies for advancing sustainable development in Uzbekistan. Both parties expressed their commitment to exploring further cooperation opportunities and to leveraging their respective strengths to promote Uzbekistan's agricultural development and water resource management in light of climate change.
